How to Care for a Gown That Tells a Story

      2025-03-26

Every Tony Ward gown begins with a sketch, a mood board filled with inspirations, and countless hours of craftsmanship. From the first hand-cut fabric to the final stitched bead, each creation is more than just a dress: it’s a memory in the making. And just like any memory worth keeping, it deserves to be cared for thoughtfully.

Owning a couture piece is a celebration, but it also comes with the responsibility of preservation. Whether it’s a bridal gown, an evening dress, or a ready-to-wear piece, these garments are built to last. And not just for one night, but for generations.

      After the Spotlight Fades

The moment may pass, but the gown stays with you. After wearing it, avoid leaving it hung for too long without proper care. Let it breathe! Yes, let it breathe literally; gently air it out in a cool, dry space. Avoid direct sunlight or heat, which can damage delicate fabrics or fade embroidery over time.

If your gown features intricate beading or embroidery (and most do when it comes to Tony Ward gowns), avoid brushing or shaking it harshly. Instead, lightly dust off any surface particles using a clean, soft cloth.

    • Professional Cleaning Only!

Couture is not built for the washing machine -never- Each Tony Ward creation is made from delicate fabrics of tulle, mousseline, crepe, organza, lace & more, and often hand-embellished and layered. Always entrust your gown to a professional cleaner who specializes in haute couture or luxury garments. Be clear about the fabrics, construction, and embellishments when dropping it off. The wrong treatment can undo what took hours to create in the Ateliers.

      Store It Well

Avoid standard plastic garment bags, which can trap moisture and affect the fabric over time. Instead, go for breathable cotton garment covers or custom couture boxes. If the gown is structured or includes layers, add acid-free tissue paper between folds to maintain its shape and prevent creasing.

Store it lying flat, when possible, especially for heavier pieces. Hanging delicate garments for long periods can lead to stretching or distortion.

    • Handle with Intention

When handling your gown, whether for storage, dressing, or showing it to someone special, make sure your hands are clean, free of lotions or perfumes. Small details matter, and intentional care extends the life and beauty of the dress.

      Preserve it With Love

Preserving a gown is about more than fabric and thread, it’s about holding on to the moment it represents. The vows, the applause, the photographs, the quiet seconds before stepping onto the runway or into the room…. it’s all stitched into that dress.

Taking care of it means honoring the story behind it and its narrative.

At Tony Ward, each creation leaves the Atelier as a piece of wearable art, built to move, to shine, to last. And when cared for properly, it will do just that, for years to come.
